How Stripe fees work

Online card payments: 2.9% + $0.30. In person with Stripe Terminal: 2.7% + $0.05. These are for domestic cards, and the percentages are of the payment amount.

Extras are added to the base rate: +1.5% for international cards, +1% when currency conversion is needed, and +0.5% for manually entered cards. Tap to Pay and some other items have their own per-authorization fees on Stripe's page.

Worked example: a $100 domestic online payment costs $3.20, so you keep $96.80. The same payment on an international card costs $4.70.

Bank payments: ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% with a $5.00 cap, so a $2,000 payment costs $5.00, compared with $58.30 by domestic card. Disputes cost $15.00 for each dispute received, and Stripe notes that network fees can also apply.

Ways to lower your Stripe fees

  • Offer ACH Direct Debit for large invoices: the $5.00 cap makes it far cheaper than card rates on big payments.
  • Avoid manually entering card numbers when you can, since that adds 0.5% on the online rate.
  • Charge in the currency you settle in to avoid the 1% conversion extra.
  • Reduce disputes with clear billing descriptors and fast customer service; each dispute received costs $15.00.
  • Stripe's pricing page offers custom packages for some businesses; ask if your volume is high.
