Square Fees: Processing Rates and Plans
Square charges a percentage plus a fixed amount on each card payment, and the rate depends on how the card is taken and on your plan (Free, Plus or Premium). The table below is taken from Square's pricing page with the date we checked it, and the calculator estimates your monthly cost.

How Square fees work
Every card payment costs a percentage of the sale plus a fixed amount. In person (tap, dip or swipe) the Free plan is 2.6% + $0.15, Plus is 2.5% + $0.15 and Premium is 2.4% + $0.15. Online and invoice card payments are 3.3% + $0.30 on Free and 2.9% + $0.30 on Plus and Premium. Manually entered cards or cards on file are 3.5% + $0.15 on every plan.
Plans are charged per location per month: Free $0, Plus $49, Premium $149. Higher plans lower the processing rate on some payment types.
Worked example: a $100 in-person sale on the Free plan costs $2.75 in fees. A $100 sale keyed in costs $3.65.
Do the paid plans pay off? Plus saves 0.1 percentage points on in-person payments, so the $49 plan fee is recovered at roughly $49,000 a month in in-person sales. For Premium the in-person break-even is roughly $74,500 a month. For online sales, Plus saves 0.4 points, a break-even of roughly $12,250 a month. These ignore any other plan features.
Ways to lower your Square fees
- Stay on the Free plan unless your monthly volume is above the break-evens shown, or you need a paid plan's features.
- Take cards in person (tap, dip or swipe) instead of keying them in, since keyed-in payments cost more.
- Let customers pay large invoices by bank transfer: Square lists ACH invoice payments at 1% with a $1 minimum, and a $10 cap on Plus and Premium.
- If you process over $250,000 a year, Square's pricing page says you can ask about custom pricing.
