Free UPC Code Generator
Enter the 11-digit body of your UPC-A number and this free UPC code generator calculates the check digit, shows the EAN-13 equivalent and draws the barcode for download. Important: a UPC that retailers accept has to come from GS1. This tool draws and checks numbers you already own; it cannot create valid, unique product numbers for you.
Enter your 11 digits and we add the check digit, or enter all 12 to check one.

How to use it
- Enter the 11 digits of your UPC-A number (or all 12 to verify an existing one).
- Read the check digit and the full 12-digit code. The EAN-13 version is the same number with a leading 0.
- Download the barcode as PNG or SVG and keep the quiet space around it when you print.
How the UPC check digit is calculated
A UPC-A has 11 data digits plus a 12th check digit. Starting from the rightmost data digit, multiply digits alternately by 3 and 1, add all the results, then pick the check digit that brings the sum up to the next multiple of 10 (it is 0 if the sum already ends in 0).
Worked example: for 03600029145, the weighted sum is 58. The next multiple of 10 is 60, so the check digit is 2 and the full UPC-A is 036000291452.
Because UPC-A and EAN-13 use the same check digit method, the EAN-13 version of a UPC-A is simply a 0 added in front (0036000291452).

Frequently asked questions
Can I make up my own UPC code with a free UPC code generator?
You can draw a barcode for any valid-looking number, but a retail UPC must be unique worldwide and is issued through a GS1 company prefix. A number you invent may belong to someone else's product, which causes listing and scanning problems. Get your numbers from GS1 US.
What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?
UPC-A is a 12-digit code used in the US and Canada. EAN-13 has 13 digits and is used worldwide. A UPC-A can be written as an EAN-13 by adding a leading 0, and scanners can read both.
Do I need a UPC to sell on an online marketplace?
Many marketplaces ask for a GS1-issued barcode number for branded products, and the rules differ by marketplace and category. Check the requirements of each marketplace you sell on before buying anything.
Why does the tool say my check digit is wrong?
The 12th digit must match the calculation of the first 11. Type only the first 11 digits and the tool will give you the correct check digit, or correct the last digit to the value shown.
Is anything uploaded when I generate a UPC barcode?
No. The barcode is calculated and drawn in your browser.
