How Clover fees work

Clover merchants pay a monthly software fee plus a processing rate per transaction. Clover explains that the processing rate is a percentage plus a flat fee, with a higher rate when the card number is typed in.

For retail, Clover's page shows card tapped, swiped or inserted at 2.6% + $0.10 on the Basic bundle and 2.3% + $0.10 on the Standard and Advanced bundles, and typed-in cards at 3.5% + $0.10 on all three. For quick-service restaurants it shows 2.3% + $0.10 in person and 3.5% + $0.10 typed in.

Clover's pricing landing page advertises "pay as little as 2.3% + 10¢ per transaction". Rapid Deposit, which pays out within minutes, is listed at 1.75%.

Worked example: a $100 retail sale on the Basic bundle costs $2.70 in processing fees when the card is tapped, and $3.60 when it is typed in.

Ways to lower your Clover costs

  • Take cards by tap, swipe or insert rather than typing them in: the typed-in rate is higher.
  • Check which bundle you need: for retail the in-person rate differs between Basic and Standard.
  • Compare the full cost, including hardware and software subscriptions, not only the processing rate. Prices shown on Clover.com are online prices and a sales representative may quote differently.
  • Use Rapid Deposit only when you need funds within minutes, because it adds a percentage fee.
