Shopify Fees: What You'll Actually Pay

Shopify's costs are a monthly plan fee plus payment processing. This guide shows the plan prices and third-party transaction fees Shopify publishes, tells you what we could not verify, and lets you estimate your monthly bill. Everything is sourced and dated.

Estimate your monthly cost

What it applies toPlanRateProcessing feesPlan feeMonthly totalEffective rate

Estimate from published rates. Hardware, taxes, add-on services and negotiated pricing are not included. Effective rate = total monthly cost ÷ monthly sales. For Shopify, this shows the third-party transaction fee plus the plan price. It excludes your payment provider's own processing fees. Plus is priced separately and is not included.

How Shopify fees work

You pay a monthly subscription (Basic, Grow, Advanced or Plus). Annual billing lowers the monthly price: Basic is $25 a month billed monthly or $19 a month billed yearly.

If you take payments with Shopify Payments, Shopify's help center says you are not charged third-party transaction fees on those orders, and card rates depend on your plan. We could not read Shopify's card rates from its pricing page, so we do not show them; the table links to Shopify for current rates.

If you use a different payment provider, Shopify charges a third-party transaction fee on top of that provider's own fees: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.

Worked example: on monthly billing, moving from Basic ($25) to Grow ($65) costs $40 more a month and cuts the third-party fee from 2% to 1%. The upgrade pays for itself when sales through a third-party gateway pass about $4,000 a month.

Ways to lower your Shopify costs

  • Pay yearly if you are sure you will stay: Basic saves $72 a year on the published prices.
  • Use Shopify Payments where it is available to you, so the third-party transaction fee does not apply.
  • If you must use another gateway, compare the upgrade break-even above before changing plans.
  • Only add POS Pro ($89 per location per month) if you need its in-person retail features.
