This is general information, not legal or tax advice.
This is a map of the credit card processing companies we cover, what each publishes, and where to read more. It is not a ranking; for scores see Best credit card processing for small business.
Companies with published rates
- Square publishes in-person, online and keyed-in rates by plan, with a $0 plan. See Square fees.
- Stripe publishes pay-as-you-go online and in-person rates plus extras and a dispute fee. See Stripe fees.
- PayPal publishes rates by payment type. See the PayPal fee calculator.
- Clover publishes rates and bundles for retail and quick-service restaurants. See Clover fees.
Companies with partial or model-based pricing
- Stax publishes a subscription with 0% markup on interchange plus flat fees; the interchange part varies.
- QuickBooks Payments says it has pay-as-you-go pricing with no separate monthly fee, but the per-method rates were not in the page text we read.
- Toast publishes a software starting price and says processing fees apply, without listing the rates.
- Shopify Payments card rates were not in the pricing page text we read; Shopify lists a third-party fee if you use another provider.
Companies we could not read
Helcim and Payment Depot publish interchange-plus pricing, which depends on the card used, so we cannot compute a monthly cost from their published numbers. We list their published fees but do not score them.

Frequently asked questions
Which are the main credit card processing companies for small businesses?
Square, Stripe, PayPal, Clover, Stax, QuickBooks Payments, Toast, Shopify Payments, Helcim and Payment Depot are the ones we cover. Pricing availability varies.
Are processors, payment facilitators and POS companies the same?
No. Toast's page says it is a payment facilitator that partners with processors; others describe themselves differently. The distinction affects whose agreement you sign.
Why are some companies not scored?
We could not verify their published pricing: some do not publish rates and some price at interchange plus a margin that varies by card.
Which is best?
See our ranking, and read the limitations for each.
How current is this?
We read each pricing page on 2026-10-15.
